COVID-19 Updates and Resources:
As cases rise across the Carolina's, widespread community panic has slowed. Many businesses are reopening and many people have returned to a new sense of normalcy. However, it is imperative to your health as well as the overall health of your community to stay safe, educated and aware of current trends.
Cases continue to rise in both North and South Carolina, we strongly recommend following CDC and WHO guidelines for safe practices especially in cases where social distancing may be difficult. Attached are links for safety practices and updated information on COVID-19. The CDC has compiled information including data, cases, at risk communities, how to protect yourself and detecting symptoms. Information from the CDC regarding COVID-19 can be accessed here. The World Health Organization has also compiled information for the general public as well community partners regarding safe practices, myth-busters and other media resources. All information from WHO regarding COVID-19 can be accessed here.
We ask that you continue to follow government and professional recommendations regarding social distancing, face coverings, etc.

Research Opportunities
Dr. Vanessa Hinson, Director of the Parkinson’s Foundation Center of Excellence at MUSC, recently spoke to the attendees at a support group meeting about two ongoing trials in the Charleston area that require minimal or no visit to a medical facility.
The TOPAZ Study is a fracture prevention trial where the medication will be administered during a one-time, 45-minute visit to your home. The ROPAD trial is an observational (no treatment) genetic study conducted during a single visit to the “little green house”, the MUSC Movement Disorders research site away from the hospital. These are two important trials and offer two ways you can help to further our knowledge of PD, with easy participation. Please contact Tim at sheehant@musc.edu for more information. You do not have to be an MUSC patient to participate!
Duke is currently enrolling PD care partners into a distance education phase of their Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and PD study, which will run on Tuesdays 2:00-3:30PM, July 14 until September 1. Mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) is a technique proven to reduce stress by helping you live in the moment. Last year Duke ran a study of MBSR for people with PD and PD care-partners, which showed encouraging improvements to participants’ stress levels. The next phase of this study, a distance education offering of MBSR, has just begun. We hope to determine if distance education courses also improve stress and will reduce barriers to participation by allowing people to take part anywhere they have an internet connection or a phone line.
