Medicare 101
This presentation will cover the basics of Medicare—what it is, who is eligible, and when and how to enroll. Lauren Heavner, Piedmont Regional Manager, SHIIP Division will walk you through the different parts of Medicare (A, B, C, and D), costs and coverage, and how supplemental insurance works. You’ll also learn about common enrollment periods, strategies to avoid late penalties, and the free resources available through SHIIP to help beneficiaries make confident, informed decisions. In addition, we’ll review Medicare Savings Programs and the eligibility criteria for Extra Help with prescription drug costs. The session will conclude with a Q&A, giving attendees the opportunity to get their Medicare questions answered.
Disclaimer: This presentation does not address how Medicare works with other insurance coverage, such as EGHPs (active and retiree), COBRA, TRICARE, or VA benefits.
About SHIIP
SHIIP (Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program) is North Carolina’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), created in 1986 to provide information and assistance to consumers regarding Medicare. A federal mandate implemented in 1992 now requires each state to have a SHIP. SHIIP services are neutral, objective, and unbiased, and are provided at no cost to the client. Any medical and/or financial information shared by the client is kept confidential. In addition to the main SHIIP office in Raleigh, there is a SHIIP Coordinating Site in every county in North Carolina.
Lauren Heavner, Piedmont Regional Manager, joined the NC Department of Insurance as a member of the Seniors Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) staff in September 2022.
Lauren recruits and trains SHIIP Volunteer Counselors and County Coordinators. She provides outreach to her counties through speaking engagements, exhibits and conferences and health fairs, and radio and television appearances across the 22 counties she support.
