Growing Connections and Raising Awareness

Our first-ever EmpowerED: Parkinson’s Education & Connection program in Myrtle Beach on June 20 was a wonderful day of learning, encouragement, and community. It was inspiring to see individuals living with Parkinson’s, care partners, families, and healthcare professionals come together to share experiences, gain valuable information, and connect with others who understand the Parkinson’s journey.

Throughout the day, attendees learned about mobility devices and dual tasking while walking, participated in a Yoga for Parkinson’s session, learned about the benefits boxing has on mobility and cognition, and discovered resources that can help them live well today with Parkinson’s.The most meaningful part of the day was the new connections and friendships made between people sharing similar experiences.

As we reflect on this special day, we’re also reminded of the importance of raising awareness about Parkinson’s disease and the symbol that unites our global community: the Red Tulip.

The Red Tulip is recognized internationally as the symbol of Parkinson’s awareness, representing hope, resilience, and the strength of everyone impacted by Parkinson’s disease. It serves as a reminder that through education, support, advocacy, and research, we can continue moving toward a brighter future for the Parkinson’s community.

PAC is proud to support that mission by providing educational programs, support groups, and movement opportunities that empower individuals and families throughout the Carolinas. Whether through an exercise class, educational webinar, support group, or community awareness event, every connection helps ensure that no one has to navigate Parkinson’s alone.

Like the Red Tulip, our Carolinas Parkinson’s community continues to bloom through hope, resilience, and connection.

On June 3, Gillian Schultz, PAC Program Director, had the pleasure of attending the first event in a series of Parkinson’s programs meant to empower those impacted by Parkinson’s disease through wellness, education, and community. Approximately 50 people attended the event to hear from Dr. Sanjay Iyer, Movement Disorder Specialist and medical director at Memory & Movement Charlotte. Dr. Iyer presented an overview of Parkinson’s, information about a variety of treatments available, and information about some exciting research developments. Stay tuned for information about the next program, happening sometime in August.

On June 20, PAC hosted the inaugural EmpowerED: Parkinson’s Education & Connection event in Myrtle Beach, bringing together individuals living with Parkinson’s disease, care partners, healthcare professionals, and community supporters for a day of learning, connection, and inspiration. The event welcomed 37 participants, and 14 sponsors and vendors, highlighting the growing need for Parkinson’s education and support opportunities in the Myrtle Beach community.

Designed to provide education and practical resources in a welcoming environment, EmpowerED offered attendees the opportunity to learn from experts, explore wellness strategies, and connect with others who understand the Parkinson’s journey.

The day began with a welcome from PAC and an informative presentation from the rehabilitation team at Tidelands Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital, who shared valuable insights on dual tasking, intensity-specific walking, and the benefits of therapy and exercise for people living with Parkinson’s disease. Attendees then had the opportunity to connect with sponsors and vendors before participating in an adaptive yoga demonstration led by Betty Durnin, CYT, C-IAYT. The morning continued with a presentation, Boxing Fights Parkinson’s, by Tanner Atkinson, highlighting the benefits of boxing-based exercise programs for individuals with Parkinson’s. The event concluded with lunch and connection, giving attendees time to build relationships, share experiences, and strengthen their sense of community.
