PAC's Mission in Motion

PAC’s Signature Symposium Brings Education, Support, and Hope to the Parkinson’s Community

“This was my first Parkinson’s symposium, having been diagnosed in December of last year. I did not realize just how much I still had to learn. At several points during the day, I found myself quite emotional as I met people who were compassionate, informative, and genuinely willing to connect me with ‘the right person’ for additional guidance and support.”

PAC’s 2026 Caring for Parkinson’s – Caring for You Signature Symposium was a day to remember! With more than 200 people convening at the Providence United Methodist Church in Charlotte, the day was full of encouragement, information, and movement. Starting off with an amazing first session, Dr. Englert, Dr. Iyer, and NP Jennifer Eleey shared information about newer medications, surgeries, and an overview of some newer therapies being researched and possible treatments in the pipeline. Then they answered questions from those submitted to PAC during registration and live from the audience.

The breakout session for Care Partners was presented by Nicole Cool, Nurse Coordinator for the MUSC Movement Disorders Program. This session provided care partners with the extra support that they need. One care partner commented: “The Symposium was just EXCELLENT!  I received so much helpful and hopeful information!  The kindness of providing meals and volunteer servers touched my heart.  As a caregiver, it is not often that I feel so special and others serving me.  Such a thankful and appreciative time for me!  Thank you so very much!”  For those with young-onset Parkinson’s, PAC board member Scott Earnshaw shared his lived experience and resources to manage Parkinson’s disease at a younger age, and there was a special support group meeting facilitated by Shawn Pinner, PAC’s YOPD Support Group leader. PAC was also thrilled to have the Michael J. Fox Foundation join us with a fabulous presentation on how each one of us can help shape Parkinson’s policy initiatives by sharing their personal story. Whether raising awareness about Parkinson’s disease, making a phone call or sending an email to a legislator, or advocating in Raleigh, NC, Columbia, SC, or Washington, DC, every one of us can make our voices heard.

The day wouldn’t have been complete without some movement! Aminta St. Onge, one of PAC’s yoga instructors, started the day off with some stretching and mobility exercises, so we could be ready to learn from our experts. Sophia Dalabakis and Jenny Malutan led an exciting and active session about physical therapy and movement with Parkinson’s.

In addition to the educational sessions, participants had plenty of time to visit with our sponsors and exhibitors to learn more about different services, products, and information there is for Parkinson’s in the community.

PAC would like to thank all of its sponsors, including Platinum Sponsor, Acadia, and Lunch Sponsor, The Ivey. A special thanks goes out to all the volunteers who made sure everything ran smoothly throughout the day.
PAC Board Comes Together to Plan for the Year Ahead

In Late August, the Parkinson Association of the Carolinas Board of Directors gathered in person for our annual retreat and what a meaningful time it was!

Together, we connected, reflected, and engaged in thoughtful strategic planning to strengthen our impact for the new fiscal year. Our focus remains clear: expanding resources, enhancing educational opportunities, growing movement therapy programs, and deepening our network of support for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease and their families.

We are incredibly grateful to our dedicated board members who generously share their time, expertise, and passion to help PAC continue to grow and thrive.  A special thank you to Maggie Clay Love Consulting for expertly facilitating our retreat and guiding productive, forward-focused conversations. We’re energized and inspired for the year ahead!

PAC Recognized for Service to the Parkinson’s Community

Our Executive Director, Joanna Chantemerle had the honor of attending Jurisdictional Reception and Awards Breakfast in Winston Salem for the 154th Grand Communication of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge and the 123rd Grand Session of the Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star.  This special event is part of their ongoing commitment to supporting charitable initiatives, education and community service efforts throughout their jurisdiction.  PAC was recognized for the meaningful and impactful work we provided in the Carolinas, and was presented with a generous charitable donation in appreciation of PAC’s service, dedication, and unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others.

This September, PAC’s program staff provided support and education around the Carolinas. Gillian, Samantha, and Rem exhibited at the Davidson County Senior Services Health Fair in Thomasville, NC, where they distributed information about PAC services provided, and general information about Parkinson’s disease. The following week, they visited the support group at the Brace YMCA in Matthews, NC to share information about PAC’s programs and services, including details about the Signature Symposium. Gillian also visited the Polk County Senior Center in Columbus, NC to present PD101: Parkinson’s Disease: Beyond the Diagnosis, where she provided an overview of the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and shared myths and facts about Parkinson’s. Lastly, PAC was excited to partner with the Levine Jewish Community Center and Jewish Family Services in Charlotte, NC to present Connecting with Community Resources, where Gillian provided an overview of PAC’s programs and how someone with Parkinson’s could access all of the free community resources available.

If you would like to have PAC visit with your support group or provide a Parkinson’s presentation, please contact Gillian Schultz, PAC’s Program Director at gschultz@parkinsonassociation.org.

FDA Approves Tavapadon for Parkinson’s Motor Symptoms
The FDA has approved tavapadon (Juvmo), a once-daily oral medication for treating motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. As a new dopamine agonist, tavapadon works by targeting specific dopamine receptors involved in movement and was studied in people with both early-stage and progressing Parkinson’s disease. Clinical trials found that tavapadon improved motor symptoms and daily activities when used alone in people with earlier Parkinson’s, and when added to levodopa, it increased “on” time and reduced “off” time. Common side effects included nausea, headache, and dizziness. Tavapadon offers another treatment option for people with Parkinson’s, although individual benefits and side effects can vary and should be discussed with a Parkinson’s care team. Read More.

New Financial Assistance Available for Patients with Neurocognitive Diseases and Psychosis
The Patient Advocate Foundation has launched a new TotalAssist fund to help eligible patients living with neurocognitive diseases with psychosis manage the cost of their healthcare. The fund provides up to $6,000 per year that can be used toward eligible expenses, including medication copays, coinsurance, deductibles, health insurance premiums, treatment-day office visit charges, and related administration fees. Because Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative conditions can be associated with psychosis, this new resource may provide valuable financial support for eligible individuals and their care partners who are facing the added costs of treatment. Mighty Therapeutics Partners with the POLG Foundation to Develop Novel Preclinical Model for POLG Mitochondrial Disorders and Parkinson’s Disease
Mighty Therapeutics has announced a new research collaboration focused on understanding the connection between mitochondrial dysfunction and Parkinson’s disease. Researchers will develop a novel preclinical model combining POLG mutations with other genetic changes associated with Parkinson’s to better study how these factors may contribute to neurodegeneration. The company is also evaluating bevemipretide, an investigational mitochondria-targeted therapy for Parkinson’s disease. The research remains in the preclinical and investigational stages but may help researchers better understand Parkinson’s disease mechanisms and explore potential new treatment approaches.
